Requirements for Original Research
Original research involving human participants, animals, or laboratory procedures must have received all applicable institutional approvals before submission. This includes:
- IRB approval or exemption for human-subjects research
- Institutional approval for animal research
- Compliance with institutional laboratory and safety policies
- Faculty supervision of student-led original research
The corresponding author must certify that all ethical and institutional requirements were met. Authors must provide supporting documentation upon request.
Secondary Data Analysis
- JESM accepts original analyses of existing datasets.
- Authors must follow all applicable data-use agreements, licensing requirements, privacy protections, and required training.
Currently Outside Our Scope
JESM does not currently accept:
- Individual patient case reports
- Research conducted without required institutional approval or exemption
- Studies involving identifiable patient information without appropriate authorization
- Original research that was not faculty supervised
- Manuscripts that do not adequately explain their ethical oversight or data source
